National Holidays

Retailers take advantage of national holiday long weekends to put on seasonal sales for the simple reason that people have more time to shop! The upcoming national holidays are Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Presidents’ Day during which many major retailers offer great discounts on winter styles and fashions.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is on the 3rd Monday of January, and in 2021 lands on January 20th. The day is a federal holiday meant to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. and his activism against racism in state and federal laws in the US.  Presidents’ Day is also a federal holiday that is observed to celebrate American presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. This holiday lands on February 17th, the third Monday of the month, during which retailers offer discounts and deals.

Super Bowl LIV

Although not a national holiday, the annual Super Bowl could be! With nearly a billion viewers annually worldwide, this is a fantastic opportunity for retailers to offer great deals and discounts. The 54th Super Bowl will be held in the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida on February 2, 2021. The Super Bowl is also associated with entertaining and memorable commercials like the Apple commercial that aired in 1984, ushering in a new era of technology. And lest we forget the entertaining, and even at times, controversial half time shows; like in 2004 when Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake took the stage. Super Bowl LIV’s halftime show promises to be a good one with performances by JLo and Shakira!

What kind of sales to expect for 2021

Traditionally, Winter sales in the US start in January once the holiday season has ended and offers deals on end-of-stock winter items. This is a good time to pick up styles to get through  the end of the season or to prepare for the following winter. Retailers also tend to have great sales on end-of-season Christmas decorations. There are also deals and offers on all the necessities to throw a proper tailgate or Super Bowl party, including televisions, groceries and NFL team gear.

  • During MLK weekend, Macy’s offers discounts on a wide range of items and brands. The department store carries clothing lines like Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, and DKNY and for the home some brands include the Martha Stewart Collection, Villeroy & Boch, and Lauren Ralph Lauren. JCPenney also has remarkable online sales that the whole family can take advantage of. Winter sales on coats for men, women and children are available as well as on other necessary winter apparel like boots, hats, scarves and gloves. Stein Mart will likely also have winter fashions at low prices - everything from business attire to casual weekend wear, including sweaters, dresses and shoes for both men and women.

  • Winter sales are a good opportunity to prepare for the next holiday season by picking up Christmas themed decorations, clothes, china and linens at a significant discount. Khol’s has a wide range of Christmas-themed items including bedding, towels, pillows, decorative accents, and candles, for example. The Home Depot tends to carry the more hardware-type Christmas-themed items for the outside of the home like lights, outdoor decorations and inflatable lawn decorations.  Retailers usually seek to sell Holiday-themed items as quickly as possible once the season comes to a wrap. This presents the perfect opportunity for consumers to buy Holiday-themed items at a much lower price for the following year!

  • In the lead up to the Super Bowl, consumers can expect sales on the essentials for a Super Bowl viewing party. The most essential item to view the Super Bowl from home is a large, high definition television. Samsung has high-tech, top-of-the-line televisions that are likely to be discounted during the winter sale leading up to Super Bowl LIV. Discounts on televisions are also usually offered by Walmart that carries brands like LG, RCA, Sony and Vizio in sizes varying from small 24” to large 75” flat screen HDTVs. And for the diehard football fans in the family, QVC carries original NFL memorabilia and collectors editions. Items like the Dallas Cowboys championship ticket collection and NFL Super Bowl LIII Patriots locker room cap will likely be promoted on the eve of the big game.
