As Black Friday 2024 quickly approaches, the excitement for incredible deals and discounts is building across the country. Our savings experts have conducted a study to uncover which U.S. states are most interested in Black Friday this year.
- Illinois came first in the study with 1,421.02 average monthly keyword searches for Black Friday related terms per 100,000 people.
- Missouri ranked second with 1,413.47 average monthly keyword searches per 100,000 people, followed by Minnesota and Kentucky in joint third.
- Alaska came last in the study with only 773.22 average monthly keyword searches per 100,000 people.
Using Google Keyword Planner our experts analyzed the average number of monthly searches for 184 Black Friday-related terms over the past 12 months, revealing fascinating insights about shopping trends across the country. Let’s discuss the results.
Top 5 Most Interested U.S. States in Black Friday

Our savings experts have uncovered the top 5 states most interested in Black Friday, here are the results:
1. Illinois Tops the List
Illinois came first in the study with 1,421.02 average monthly keyword searches per 100,000 people. There was an average monthly total of 178,334 Black Friday related searches over the past year from a population of approximately 12.5 million residents.
The top searched terms were:
- 'black friday deal' – 18,122 searches
- 'black friday' – 13,483 searches
- 'black friday deals walmart' – 6,873 searches
2. Missouri not far behind
Missouri ranked second with 1,413.47 average monthly keyword searches per 100,000 people. From a population of approximately 6.1 million residents, there was an average monthly total of 87,581 Black Friday related searches over the past year.
The most common searched terms were:
- 'black friday deal' – 7,926 searches
- 'black friday' – 5,482 searches
- 'black friday walmart' – 4,395 searches
3. Minnesota & Kentucky tie for third
Minnesota tied for third with 1,411.21 average monthly keyword searches per 100,000 people. There was an average monthly total of 80,974 Black Friday related searches over the past year from a population of approximately 5.7 million residents.
Minnesota’s most searched terms were:
- 'black friday deal' – 7,861 searches
- 'black friday' – 5,474 searches
- 'black friday deals walmart' – 2,969 searches
Kentucky also ranked third with 1,411.21 average monthly keyword searches per 100,000 people. From a population of approximately 4.5 million residents, there was an average monthly total of 63,873 Black Friday related searches over the past year. The most commonly searched terms were:
- 'black friday deal' – 6,423 searches
- 'black friday' – 3,528 searches
- 'black friday walmart' – 3,520 searches
4. Texas
Texas came fourth with 1,409.13 average monthly keyword searches per 100,000 people. There was an average monthly total of 429,832 Black Friday related searches over the past year from a population of approximately 30.5 million residents. Their top search terms included:
- 'black friday deal' – 52,717 searches
- 'black friday' – 39,108 searches
- 'when is black friday' – 18,850 searches
5. Nebraska
Nebraska ranked fifth with 1,404.94 average monthly keyword searches per 100,000 people. From a population of approximately 1.9 million residents, there was an average monthly total of 27,795 Black Friday related searches over the past year. The top three search terms were:
- 'black friday deal' – 2,866 searches
- 'black friday' – 1,629 searches
- 'black friday deals walmart' – 1,316 searches
Other states in the top 10 include Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, Colorado, and Tennessee.
Least Interested State: Alaska
At the other end of the spectrum, we have Alaska. Our study experts found that Alaska showed the least interest in Black Friday this year with only 773.22 average monthly keyword searches per 100,000 people. There was an average monthly total of 5,671 Black Friday related searches over the past year from a population of approximately 730,000 residents.

“Black Friday has become a highly anticipated shopping event in the US, with thousands of online retailers advertising exclusive deals in order to capitalize on the occasion. For many Americans, it marks the start of the Christmas shopping season and an opportunity to bag a number of discounted items before the holidays.
“It is notable that many of the states in the top 10 are in the Midwestern region, which suggests a shared shopping culture amongst their populations. Walmart was found to be the store Americans were most interested in ahead of the Black Friday sales, with 167,527 monthly searches on average for 'black friday deals Walmart.' Best Buy and Target were the second and third most searched-for stores relating to Black Friday.”

Methodology:
This analysis used monthly average search volume data from Google Keyword Planner based on searches over the past 12 months to reveal the rankings for the states most interested in Black Friday 2024.
Keywords such as the following were generated through the use of Ahrefs:
Black Friday,
Black Friday 2024,
Walmart Black Friday deals,
Netflix Black Friday,
etc.
A list of 184 unique and relevant keyword combinations was produced, and the search volume data for each combination was collected on both a state and national level.
The total search volume for each state per 100,000 people was then calculated, with these results being ranked from highest to lowest to reveal the states most interested in and prepared for Black Friday 2024.
We use a third party provider, MailUp, to deliver our newsletter. We gather statistics based on email openings and clicks using industry standard technologies to help us monitor and improve our newsletter.
